"used to"

Hi guys.
I have a little problem with "use to".

I have two examples:

1. Jane is American. She went to Britain and found driving on the left difficult. At first she wasn't used to driving on the left

on this sentence the verb is ending with an ing

2. After breakfast, we used to spend our entire day in the field.

This sentence don't have ane ing...

be used to + ing / sth. is used if something is familiar.

I'm used to the noise.

used to + infinitive is used when we talk about past habits or states.

I used to smoke, but now I've stopped.

Ich finde es gibt eine simplere Erklärung:

to be used to doing something => Hier ist das "used" ein Adjektiv.
I used to do something => Hier ist es ein Verb.

Wenn es ein Adjektiv ist, muss die -ing Form nachgestellt werden, wenn es ein Verb ist, folgt der Infinitiv.

ist alles in der Vergangenheit oder?

I do not agree with your answer. First, you use the wrong grammatical term for 'used'. It's not an adjective. In fact, it is a past participle and, thus, part of the verb phrase formed with the auxiliary be.
Second, both terms have completely different meanings, that is to say, they're not interchangeable.

to be used to doing something -> gewohnt sein etw. zu tun
I used to do something -> etwas immer / früher getan haben

btw.: used to + infinitive is a semi-modal

- wrong tense in the main clause -> I got used to

Als ich in Deutschand war habe ich mich daran gewöhnt die deutsche Sprache zu sprechen.
