Hi all,
I am German but my girl is British. She moved in two mionth ago and just finished her A1.1 level German.
She has problems finding friends while I am at work and even she's giving private English lessons often she feels bored.
Does anybody have ideas how to find new friends in a German town? And I am looking for a book in English which describes some stuff about Germany (politics, the education system etc.)...
Would be great to hear of you...
Mr.Becks

Hi,
for finding new friends or get to know people the classic approaches still work even in times of the Internet . For example: Join a sport team, going together to pub, introduce yourself officially to your neighbors, you name it.... In my opinion the biggest problem is making the first contact. Once you introduced yourself as someone from abroad people usually understand that you're interested in getting to know new people and act appropriately.
Regarding the english literature about Germany, websites like Spiegel also have content written in English: http://www.spiegel.de/international/ .
Furthermore, Wikipedia articles are usually available in English too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Germany , take a look into the references at the end of the page there might be something your girlfriend is interested in and written in English.
Kind regards

She can try to get in touch with a local English speaking 'Stammtisch' which are organised group meetings.
Those people meet regularly to communicate in English and German (tandem like).

I am a member at http://www.internations.org - a community for expatriats from everywhere anywhere. It is not only an online community but they also organise local meetings - esp. in big cities.
They used to have invite-only membership and if they still have, just contact me again.
