In the following I´ll discuss, whether the Union Flag by David Cohen is likely to become the official flag of the UK:
(Whether you) Like it or not, cultural diversity exists in Britain. Furthermore, the so-called Britishness - the melt down of different cultures to one - is a goal of Britain´s government. That means the inhabitants of the UK are forced to to think of themselves as British, although they rather see themselves - for instance - as a Welsh or as a African. Looking at the present Union Flag, you´ll find out that only the core cultures are represented. This fact doesn´t agree with/fit/go with the government´s idea of Britishness. So why don´t the UK´s inhabitants have the right to vote on a new design?
However, it´s quite unusal that a country changes its flag. Furthermore, Cohen´s redesign seems to be a bit ridiculous, as it´s quite colourful. One aspect that has to be considered, furthermore, is that all of Britain´s colonies declared their independence. Hence they aren´t part of the UK anymore. All in all, I believe Cohen´s redesign is a good idea but I reckon that it won´t become the official flag of the UK.

What´s your opinion?
Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much!

"Do you really think the proud English will give up their beloved St. George's cross? Or the Scots will give up their St. Andrew's cross? Not a chance!"

In fact, they will not give up their flags! But both the St. George's cross and the St. Andrew's cross are a part of Cohen's redesign! Furthermore, both of them are just parts in the present Union Flag, that means the St. Georg's cross - for instance - is not a flag on its own. Therefore, it is all the same to the English, whether Cohan´s Union Flag becomes the official flag or not.

Best,
Kevin

I don't understand where you're coming from. The flags of the Union and the flags of the countries are different cettle of fish just like the German flag is different from the German states' flags.
You're never too old to learn something stupid.
MistakeSuggestionYou sure that's right?

@tiorthan, (a tiny typo: kettle of fish)
well the Union Flag is really a conglomeration, i.e. is made up of the flags of England (St George's Cross), Scotland (St Andrew's Cross) and Ireland (St Patrick's Cross). I suppose that's what Kevin is thinking of.

"the German flag is different from the German states' flags."

I have never heard about this fact.
