Hi Andy,andy55 hat geschrieben:Certainly, the vocabulary
My English course takes place every Wednesday. And the next day we get our exerices. In my opinion the exercises are too difficult and they don't help me really to improve my English.
Why do I say that? For example: The task was: What is a biome, talking about the Vulcanic eruption in Iceland, and so on. I did not want to study Biology.
I think this won't help me to get any further. We are not talking abouttheeveryday English.
A few weeks ago I met other colleagues at a workshop.
And the teacher simulated the oral exam. And what was the outcome?
The students from the second semester did not pass the exam or they received a bad mark.
Two weeks ago we are talking about the Sharia Law. Do you remember? I translated the following German sentence as follows: Die Geschichte handelt vom Sharia Gesetz. My translation ran as follows: The story deals with the Sharia Law.
My teacher said only: absolutely wrong, "deals" is not good.
And this gets on my nerves and it makes my desperate. I spend so much time in my study and what is the outcome?
on the one hand I do see where you are coming from but on the other hand - just to stick with your examples - the eruption of the volcano in Iceland and the ash cloud are topical events. So it does not surprise me that your teacher wants you to talk and write about them. The task about the biome is unusual - I do fairly admit this - however I think your teacher tries to cover as many subjects as possible. And to be honest with you, I don't think you're upset by the topics as such but by the fact that you can't really write or talk about them. Am I right?
When you write that your teacher says "The story deals with the Sharia Law" is absolutely wrong.. mmh.. the word "deals with" is not entirely wrong but I think what the teacher wanted you to do was to find better expressions, such as "is about". has your teacher given you a correction? If so, what is the correction?
Don't be upset, Andy, learning English isn't something you can do from one day to the next, you know? It takes lots of time, just don't fret.
