Summary of an extract

Beitrag von Saphire »

Hey Leute,
es handelt sich um einen Auszug des Romans "About a boy" von Nick Hornby. Ist für die Korrektur aber nicht wichtig. Wäre toll wenn hier mal jemand drüber gugen könnte und das Gröbste anstreicht ^^

Summary of an extract of "About a boy" by Nick Hornby

Marcus, an introverted, bullied 12-year-old boy, and his friend Ellie, a tough 15-year-old girl who is always in trouble at school, are on the train and on their way to meet Marcus's father. Ellie is upset because Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the band Nirvana, has just committed suicide.
Until the beginning of the action the two friends had not talked to each other as Ellie was disturbing other passengers, while Marcus was thinking about Ellie's rude behaviour but also how much he actually likes her after all. Although he tries to bring out the best of it, he finally realizes that he definitely does not want Ellie to be his girlfriend because she is too different.
They finally break the silence and start to small-talk about the recently deceased Kurt Cobain, who was an idol for Ellie. In the conversation she describes her relation with him and also tries to give Marcus an answer to his previously asked question, why she hated life so much.
While they are having a lull in conversation and while Marcus is still thinking about what Ellie just said, Ellie suddenly gets off the train at the wrong station. She tells him she does not want to go to his father's anymore but cannot give him a logical explanation for that. Marcus is irritated but follows her as he does not want to lose her out of sight.
They walk along the streets until they come to a record shop which has a cardboard model of Kurt Cobain in the window. Ellie gets so angry about the fact that someone tries to make profit from his dead, that she brakes the window on the spot to take the cardboard out of the shop.
At that point , Marcus panics and runs away only to change his mind after some minutes and to go back. He sits down with Ellie and asks her to give him a reason for what just happened. After he only received another stupid reply again, he ultimately decides to leave her alone.
But just at that time a guy with long hair and a suntan, who heard the noise of the cracking windows tells them both to stay. The extract ends with Ellie's reply: "We're not going anywhere, are we, Marcus?"

...Danke !
