Re: Let's practise English
Thanks for these answers. I want try to write (I) and especially countries in capital bocks. Thank you for your comment about my problem. I´m really surprised that many people have problems to find the right word in the right time. I suggest that we also have to think in english before we are going to talk on the telephone. But I´m smiling in the moment because I have to search for the right word in my last sentence which I have written. Oh my god. I wanted to write the word (vermuten) and then I think .. and think... and then I want to write another word for (vermuten) ... and then I have deleted the sentence and have written a new.
On monday I will have (Probearbeiten) ... I would write... On monday I will work for the company for a week. But I don´t know the word for (Probe)
If I cannot speak in English, then I don`t get the job.

I wouldn't have changed "problems to find" to "problems in finding". It's not wrong per se but using in here makes finding the right words look like something one practises seprately while it seems clear to me that in the situation the OP describes it is merely a symptom of her general lack of practise in English.

The OP will have to do actual supervised work for the company to test her abilities. -> work sample.Probearbeiten/Probeklausuren (bei Tests)= mock exams

Re: Let's practise English
You'll start thinking in English at some point down the line, but you'll need to be very patient and keep learning and practising your English...Kathy84 hat geschrieben:I think in German when I want to speak in English. I hate it...
Well, it also happens when we communicate in German. Doesn't it?I'm really surprised that many people have this problem - finding the right words at the right time.
Ich bin wirklich überrascht, dass viele Leute dieses Problem haben - im richtigen Zeitpunkt die richtigen Worte zu finden. Wirklich?
Although the frequency is much lower and also depends on the person.
So even among Germans we experience situations when we are (kind of) speechless.
Given the fact that most Germans don't use English on a daily basis it's not really surprising
that you need to think a bit harder when you are expected to speak in English.
It's well known among teachers that the active and passive vocabulary of a learner changes constantly.
Students start using new words, try new meanings, forget words, abandon words that have no use, revise words, etc.
A learner's active vocabulary are the words that they understand and use in speaking or writing.
This can be compared with passive vocabulary, which are words that learners understand but don't use yet.
Attributing the problem of finding the right words at the right time to the general lack of practise in English kind of impliestiorthan hat geschrieben:...it seems clear to me that in the situation the OP describes

these words are already known as part of the passive vocabulary and with some more practise they would become part of the active vocabulary.
I cannot agree with this statement completly because there are so many words we never had the opportunity to hear the English translation for
and therefore they are not even part of the passive vocabulary yet.
I've been living, working and studying in the UK for nearly 2 years now and I still find German words I don't know the English translation for.
Hey, sometimes I don't even know the meaning of the German translation because there are so many specialised fields which have their own vocabulary
which you can only make real sense of when you already have at least a basic understanding of the area or processes involved.

Re: Let's practise English
Hi guys
I am new here and I entered this board in the hope to get more self-confident concerning my englisch. Although my mark are actually not so bad (I mostly can keep a bad 2), I feel always very insecure when I have to write english texts or when I have to speak or to hear englisch.
Though the last entry have been contributed some days ago, I hope there are still some people interested in helping me getting more confident by conserving with me as you did in course of the whole board and/or by correcting my mistakes.
Looking forward to your replies, dear greetings at you all, Kathrin

Are you on holiday? No, I'm working and I'm supposed to be studying. So it's obvious that I shouldn't be here.

I don't know nothing about holidays, there's work to be done and I am really busy at the moment having my regular job and two clients at the same time.
And as for the weather: Rainy at times - a typical Lower Saxonian summer.

Re: Let's practise English
Holidays? What's that? No seriously, I am working as well, but have booked holidays for the end of September. Weather.. rather unsettled to be honest, had some heavy rain showers on the weekend. It's sunny today but the forecast is rather unpleasant with heavy rain all day tomorrow.

Re: Let's practise English
Hello
@Delfino Are you in England this time?
@Tiorthan Oh I am really not envying this (?). Have you already had something like summer holidays this year?
Here in North Rhine-Westphalia the weather seems to be very similar, it really reminds me about the autumn. It's terrible, because so it cannot be arised the typical summer-holiday-feeling
@Keswick Yes, I thing the weather is terrible everywhere at the moment, I am really regretting!
Where will you spend your booked holidays?

Re: Let's practise English
What are you regretting?
Yes, the weather is horrendous. We have a band of heavy rain with up to 2,5 inches of rain heading towards us, coming from Ireland. So not looking forward to this.
We're going to Alcudia, in the North of Majorca. I've never been before but it's supposed to be nice.

Nope, I have not had a summer holiday this year. I'm going to have a week in August and one in September though neither is a summer holiday but rather free time which I will mostly spend on the construction site in our house.

@ keswick: Sorry, I think to regret is the wrong word. Anyhow, I hate it
Oh I hope it will past by very fast!
I have never heard Alcudia, and I have never been in Majorca, too, but I would really like to be there one day, because it always sounds good! Have a nice holiday there
@ Delfino: Oh yes, right. Sorry, I didn't notice it. Since when are you there and when will you return to Germany? (You have been living in Germany before, haven't you?)
@ tiorthan: oh, that's how it is. Then I wish you a nice week and relax a bit
