Beitrag von dermazta »

Hi,

general things about Christmas Island
On 24th December in 1777 James Cook discovered this island with his fleet. Christmas is on this day as everyone knows therefore the island is called Christmas Island.
Christmas Island belongs to Australia as it were an external territory. If you sale goods at its remote location you don’t pay any tax. The island has an average width of 7 kilometres and a maximum length of 23.7 kilometres. The area has a quantity of 135 square kilometres, 63 per cent of which is a National Park. 27 degree Celcius are the average daytime temperature. Today only 1700 people live at Christmas Island because the most of them are emigrate. If you look for a quite place which is far away from industrially cities I recommend to you to travel to ChristmasIslands.
The diversity of the settlers and their cultures had a big influence of the own culture from Christmas Island. Today most inhabitants are Chinese, Australian, European and Malay origin. They are citizens of Australia and got the Australian citizenship.
At Christmas Island the main language is English but there are many people who speak their mother tongues too and with it they talk to each other. The other most spoken languages are Malay and the four Chinese dialiects. The earliest settlers influenced today’s language.
In the Pacific ocean around Christmas Island live the fastest fish from all over the world. He is called Wahoo. From November through to April the whale shark has his home in front of the coast. The red crabs are a fantastic species, too. They live only there.
Today the people work in the mine where they quarry phosphate for South East Asia. The money they get from Asia they use to restore parts of the rainforest. You can find there a space satellite launching station. The gouvernement paid money to built a for tourists.

National Park of Christmas Island

Then you love the nature, you will love Christmas Island! There are fascinations of nature. 63% of the island belong to the national park. Park Australia North managed the Christmas IslandNational Park. It needed many years for the island to emerge from the Indian Ocean. Just a little number of animals and plants is able to reach the big distant between Christmas Island and Asian or the rest of Australian. The next problem for them is that they must survive on Christmas Island. As a result this island has a different ecology than other islands. On this Island you can find animals which you can only find here and at no other places on our world.
Some years ago the National Park was declared under AustralianCommonwealth law. Over 60% of the island, more than 85 square kilometres belong to Commonwealth. The National park protects and preserves the single ecological system which is a beautiful tropical island: the ocean shores, the reefs and the magnificent rainforests.
This island is a centre point for sea birds, there live more as eight sort of sea birds. Most of the birds nest on the sea cliff and inland cliffs for example the Brown Booby. The RED-footed Booby that nests in colonies is the most numerous. He nests in trees and on many parts of the shore terrace. The Abbott’s Booby which is listed as endangered nest on trees of the northern southern and western plateau rainforest. The forest of Christmas Island is the only place left in the world where the Abbott’s Booby nested. Sometimes more than 76 vagrant or migrant bird species have been seen on the National Park.
But the National Park has a wonderful flora, too. On Christmas Island are 200 species of native vegetable. There are a lot of different climate, these are the marine environment, shoreline platforms, beaches, sea cliff zone, shallow soil rainforest, limestone scree slopes and pinnacles, simple rainforest, perennially wet areas, caves and sinkholes. On the island is rainforest, too. You can find the rainforest on some terraces and in the deep soils of the plateau. The rainforest is dominated by 25 tree species like ferns orchids and vines flourish. On Christmas you can find 16 species of flora which you can only find here. On Christmas Island you can find 135 species of flora.
In the National Park of Christmas Island you is a wonderful animal and flora world which you can’t find at any other places in the world.

red crabs

On Christmas Island you can find a lot of red crabs. They are dotted around the floor of the forest. The mass walking of the red crabs to the sea is one wonder of the our natural world. This walking of red crabs makes the Christmas Island famous. The walking of the red crabs has just one reason: propagation. This is an adventure you never will forget than you see it.
At first they bath in the sea. After the bath the mails dig a hole in the beach of Christmas Island. In this holes they have there propagation. After this the take a bath again. Then the females stay 13 days in the holes. They put down the fertilized eggs in the sea. Then they finished the put down they go back in the tropical forest. One fermal red crabs put down 100.000 eggs. The eggs float then in the sea. The crab babies come after one month on the island back but this happens only one or two times in ten years because all larva’s are most eaten by sharks and other fishes. But the existence of them isn’t not in dangerous. The males go back to the rainforest after there propagation.
The Red Crabs of Christmas Island like a environment of the rainforest, but the live in a variety of habitats, too. Even in the domestic gardens and costal shore terraces live they. They dig holes in every square metre or live on rocks. The most time of the year a crab living in their burrow. Their burrows has one entrance tunnel and one chamber. Every crab has their one burrow and the Red Crabs do not accept intruder into their burrows outside of the breeding season.
Red Crabs are active during the day. In the nights they are almost inactive. The most important factor for their activity is to conserve body moisture. Crabs like humid season, then they are active. In the dry season their don´t leave their burrows for two to three months of a year.
If you want to see it you must come to Christmas Island with the start of the wet season with the synchronisation with the cycle of the moon. At no other places in the world you can see a mass walking of crabs like this.

diving on Christmas Island

If the water is very clear the divers can see into the depths and admire the fantastic forest of corals. The amazing animals who live in the warm water around the island are for example whale sharks, tuna, hammerhead sharks and mantas. As you can see there are multiple kinds of sharks near the island. Some kilometres away from the coast live dolphins and myriads of tropical fish in sea caves. Most of the caves are formed by the waves lashing against the cliff. For people liking adventures is that certainly the best one. Into the cave the diver can suface because in it is a air filled dome with stallagmites and stallactites.
As I say the whale shark visits the island in large numbers from November through to April. The whale shark is the biggest fish but he is harmless because he eats only plankton. The larves of the crabs belongs also to the food eating by the whale shark. The whale shark you could find not anywhere he is only on definite places at home.
There are 40 dive sites avaiable. That is unusual for so a small island. Now I want to discribe multiple dive sites which are very popular. I start with the West White Beach that is the largest beach all over the island. There you can find the spectacular hard coral reef. In this reef the pristine coral lives, also masses of Porite heads and Staghorn. Photographers can take photos of this beautiful animal and plant world for hours.
Pig Rock is the most distant dive site. The rock looks like a pig’s head and protrudes from the cliff. It starts with a platform 10 metres under water which is coverd with red corals. The wall fall up to 80 metres and is covered with growth and giant georgian corals. You can see sharks, tuna and baracuda cruising in the stream. Sometimes the visibility is over 40 metres.

Es heißt z.B. immer "in a place". Die Mehrzahl von larva ist larvae. Gefunden im Online-Dictionary Leo:

Hi, mazta

ich weiß nicht, ob Du zu den Leuten zählst, für die Höflichkeit 'ne entbehrliche Tugend ist. Nevertheless - es ist noch niemandem ein Stein aus der Krone gefallen, wenn er sich bedankt hat.
