According to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Administration's (USTTA) annual "In-Flight Survey" of International Air Travelers, between January-December 1992, 3.7 percent of 12,809 international visitor respondents surveyed reported that they traveled by RV.

More and more international visitors are opting for renting the RV, thus enabling them to enjoy America at their own pace. Many routes and destinations are available to accommodate RVers and campers by offering theme itineraries linking historical, cultural, and natural attractions. This, in turn, is causing an economic multiplier effect on a diversity of travel industry sectors. The conscientious integration of recreation and its byproducts, such as recreational vehicular travel, campgrounds, bicycling, boating, and hiking, are examples of tourism activities that are a major part of sustainable niche tourism. The income generated by rural tourism and the byproducts, however modest, can revitalize communities, encourage further economic investment, and continue to promote the wonderland of America.
