The Commonwealth of Nations - no homework

Beitrag von ibri »

The Commonwealth of Nations is the organisation of former British colonies - it represents 54 countries and about a third of the world's population. The memebers use English as their first or second language and the Westminster parlamentary system. Cricket and rugby create strong bonds. Ireland left the Commonwealth - because of ideological differences - in 1948. Mugabe pulled Zimbabwe out of the Commonwealth. Strangely, Yemen, Sudan, Madagaska and Algeria would like to join. It seems that France did try to join in the 1950s. Britain did not allow this, so Germany and France found the EU. The boss of the Commonwealth is Queen Elizabeth II. and not presidents and ministers of members. The organization has long supported free trade, but now it tries to share benefits of globalization more fairly.
