Substantive, die nur im Plural gebraucht werden
Die Plural-Substantive
Im Englischen gibt es Substantive, die nur im Plural gebraucht werden. Dazu gehören folgende Wörter:
1. Paarwörter
Substantiv | Beispielsatz |

jeans | Where are my jeans? (Wo ist meine Jeans?) |
glasses | She has lost her glasses. (Sie hat ihre Brille verloren) |
scissors | These scissors don't cut well. (Diese Schere schneidet nicht gut.) |
Wenn man betonen möchte, dass man z.B. ein Paar Jeans gekauft hat, dann sagt man:
- I have bought a pair of jeans.
Bei zwei Paar wäre es:
- I have bought two pairs of jeans.
weitere Substantive: binoculars, headphones, pyjamas, scales, shorts, tights, trousers
2. Substantive, die es im Englischen nicht im Singular gibt (Oberbegriffe)

people** | Three people were killed in the car crash last Friday evening. (Drei Menschen wurden letzten Freitagabend bei dem Autounfall getötet.) |
police | Look! The police are coming. (Sieh mal! Die Polizei kommt gerade.) |
* Das Wort stair bedeutet im Deutschen (Treppen)stufe.
** Das Wort people kann auch Volk bedeuten, dann kann man es auch im Singular benutzen:
- They are a friendly people. (Sind sind ein freundliches Volk.)
- The native peoples of Africa often have black skins. (Die gebürtigen Völker Afrikas haben oft schwarze Haut.)
3. Bestimmte Nationalitäten
Folgende Nationalitäten (ohne -s) werden im Plural gebraucht:
- the Dutch
- the British
- the English
- the French
- the Spanish
- the Welsh
Die Einzahl von the English wäre z.B. the Englishman.
