Oh, dear tiorthan, I think you could have taken it as extremely insensitive of me that I did not go into this sentence from you at all. I have to admit that on the day of my last answer I was in a hurry, so I just hurried through your answer and answered it. At least I shouldn't have done that in that case, because I really appreciate the fact that you answer me so openly and honestly about yourself. I have no experience with autism at all. The only thing I've heard over and over again is that autistic people are highly intelligent, which is obviously confirmed in your case. As for the filters in your brain, that's why you were kind of wondering why someone like me bothered with things like gradable/ungradable etc, because most people who study English usually don't do that while you're dealing with such things because the filters in your brain do not make it clear to you that such things are not so important for learning a foreign language? In any case, I would be honestly sorry if you had taken my non-reaction to your explanation as disinterest. Because it is definitely not like that! I am always happy to read from you. :wink2:

What autism basically means is that we are aware of too many things but we are quite normal in every other way. Our brains don't filter out the less important or even unimportant things. Everything else is just a consequence of that. It's basically a learning disability of the type of learning called unsuperwised learning.

Being normal in every other way also means that intelligence is normally distributed among autistic people. But intelligence can be used to compensate for the learning disability at least in some ways, which is why intelligence is unevenly distributed when you look high- and low-functioning separately. And since you're more likely to talk to high functioning autistic people this miconception has persisted.
As for the filters in your brain, that's why you were kind of wondering why someone like me bothered with things like gradable/ungradable etc,
That's not the reason in this case. I wonder, because it is something that crops up rather rarely.

I would, by the way, not have been offended if you just skipped over that. When I give out information it's not because I expect reciprocity, unless I say so explicitly.

I understand a little better now. Thanks for the explanation - also with regard to autistic people. But even if you don't expect reciprocity, I still think that it is part of a reasonable human interaction not to simply ignore certain things without comment. I am very empathetic and always try to make sure that others don't feel offended in any way. But in that case I also differ from the crowd of most people. Many of them don't even say "thank you" when (or is "if" here nessesary?) you helped them.

Maybe, but it is something that's not immediately obvious to me.
To me, a whole layer of communication is purely academical. I understand the existence of the rules, but I do not really understand the need for many of them like greetings or saying thanks or, as in this case, having to respond to something that doesn't actually prompt you to respond, and thus I get them wrong rather often. Well, I manage greetings because they're easy and it doesn't hurt when you thank people too often, but there are some things I don't get.

Hi tiorthan,

Habe zwei Fragen :Wenn ich sage :"This is no daydream", wie ist denn dann der semantische Unterschied zu "This is not a daydream", falls es einen gibt? KR, Bon

There's no goat around here I could share my trouble with?

"Not a" würde hier wegen des "there is" nicht funktionieren. (Zumindest wäre die Bedeutung eine andere.)

In diesem Satz:
There is no goat here .. = Es gibt hier keine Ziege ...
There is not a goat here ...

Inwiefern spielt das there is da hinein? LG Bon
