The moon in „Moon Palace“
The novel “Moon Palce” deals frequently with the moon.
At the beginning of the novel it tells us from the first moonlanding and M.S. Fogg’s uncle has played clarinet in a band which named “Moonlight Moods”.
In New York Fogg discovers a Chines restaurant with the name “Moon Palace”. This Chines restaurant has a neon sign with the words “Moon Palace” on the front of it. At this moment Fogg has a vision because he has the impression that the letters hang “in the darkness like a message from the moon”. The sign reminds him to his uncle victor and the band.
Also the moon is a symbol for the future because in the novel it says that “the sun is the past, the earth is the present and the moon is the future”.
In the time with Effing the moon plays aslo an important role for Fogg because in earlier times Effing was a painter and he made picture which is called “Moonlight” with has the moon in the middle.
At the end of the book it is speaking from the moon. There “the moon c[o]me up from behind the hills”. This is a parallelism to the beginning of the novel.
Noch ne allgemeine Frage: In welcher Zeitform schreibt man eigentlich so generell Essays, ist present tense da ok?
