What to visit/do in an around Chicago IL

I know it's been a while and as it always is, one only shows up when having a problem.

So I have a problem or rather a request.

I'm going to visit Chicago IL in fall for two weeks. I've already found out all the famous places to visit, top ten sightseeings and tourist attraction etc.
What I look for now are some insider advices. Lovely cafes, parks, restaurants, streets, things like that. The hotel is somewhere around Wheeling IL, so suggestions for the surrounding area would also be welcome. (I'm going to rent a car.)

Have you heard of Gino's East? If you weren't already aware, Chicago is in part renowned for its "Deep Dish" pizza. This particular restaurant was featured on an episode of one of my favorite television shows, Man v. Food. If I were headed to the Windy City, that's one place I wouldn't miss out on.
