In the Basin Range to the east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, at the end of State Route 207 Bodie is situated. Bodie: the greatest ghost town of the United States.
During the gold rush, in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Waterman S. Bodey ,also known as William S. Bodey, discovered some gold near Mono Lake. Three years after that in 1861, the first mill was built and twenty miners lived in the settlement whose name was changed because of an misunderstanding to Bodie. Avidity and the hope for a better life made that the number of inhabitants rose up to 10.000 in 1879. More than 2.000 bulidings stood beside the Green Street which was the one mile long main street. 65 saloons, 7 breweries and a big red-light district with many brothels, gambling halls and opium dens sweetened the hard life of the miners. Some people say that there was one dead man a day, but this is probably just a legend to top of the image of the wild west town. These stories about murders, prostitution and robbery made Bodie popular and not the gold and silver which was digged in the mines. The noble metal in the ground around Bodie feed the inhabitants till 1881 when the population figure begun to fall and settled down at 3.000. For the remaining people two churches were bulit, the methodist church, which is still standing, and the catholic church, which was destroyed during a fire. Before the construction of the churches, the priests held services in the guildhall which was the social center of Bodie and contained also something like a fitness center. About this time there was also an opera house in Bodie but the hayday of the town was over. To power the town and the mines with energy, in 1910 a hydroelectric powerstation was built at the Green Creek. 13 miles of lines were needed to conect the station with Bodie and the mines. But this achievement couldn't anticipate that the population became smaller and smaller.Fires in1892 and 1932 destroyed most if the buildings and chased the people away. Bob Conway was one of the few who stayed during the Second World War but in the 1950's the last inhabitant left. When now looking at the houses and the furnishing it seams that the resident left just a minute before. On some tables there is still standing the dishes and in the scholl house the inkpots are still on the form. It's debatable if these items are really left by the former inhabitants but probably the staff arranged it. The employees are year-round in Bodie since the government of California declared Bodie to a State Park in 1961. Even during the winters there is everytime a ranger and if you are able to cope with the snow on the streets you can visit the park. Every year there is a lot of snow and cold guts of wind because Bodie is located over 2500 metres. If the visitors want to inform about the weather, there is a forecast service in the internet and the current street conditions are listed, too. More than 200.000 person a year want to discover the city in which the time seams to stand still. The park management decided not to restore anything in Bodie, they just want to keep the houses in their actual state. For 3$ the day the people can imagine how the life during the gold rush was like. With an previous announcement you can also get a guided tour trough the mill. There is also a little museum and a bookstore where you can learn some more about the city an its history and you can buy books about it. A big part of the of the visitors are pupils but Bodie State Historic Park is also a great tourist attraction in California. Bodie is also a favored motif for photographers and the park management organizes photographer workshops from time to time.
I couldn't find any information about shoots for movies but for me Bodie would be better than every backdrop for a western. The remaining houses while a sunset when the wind blow through the main street: These scene would comply completly my and the sterotype about the west of many other people as well. Which place on earth could be more like the setting of "Once upon a time in the West" ?

Bodie

Beitrag von George »

Hi,

Vielleicht findet man ja doch was...
