I know what you mean, Caro, it was the same here. I only wanted Germany to win because of all the hassle here and because I am so fed up with all the England flags EVERYWHERE :( . Was it / Is it as bad in Germany as it was in England. I am saying WAS because about 90% of the flags disappeared over night.

Needless to say my hubby was gutted yesterday. We initially wanted to have a picnic but he wanted to watch the match. Afterwards he would not touch the sandwiches I had made for us, he was just too upset. Bless him!

Sometimes I wonder why German are more friendly and loyal to Austrians than the other way round.
Today I talked with a friend of mine and she said that they they are unbearable when they've won a match.
She really hoped that England would win and that the German would have to go home. I think of course there's this referee-thing, but I think it's nice that the youngest team in this world cup has come so far. :D
Of course, if the referee Emilio Rosetti (I think that was his name) had seen this (or, more correctly, his assistant, the whole match would had ended not like this.
But I think it's a bad thing that many Austrian don't like the German team, because the German are so snooty when they win. Because I think: We shouldn't wish a team to loose, just because their landsmen are silly when they win.

I mean, we can't judge a team because of their landsmen, can we?

And this match will probably be such a historic match as the match England-Germany in 1966. Oh, dear. I hate it when people are NOW speculating about this goal in 1966. It's more then forty years ago other people played!
Oh, dear.
And what they say.. "WE WON!", "WE showed the damn English where to go home!" "Now they got what they earned!"

Strange thing, this patriotism.

Football should connect, Football should be fun. Why are so many things, which were a good idea once, so completely different now?
Sometimes the referees even get murder threats just because of such a decision.
And they curse like.. I don't know.
Did you see the English coach? He cursed like a taxi driver. Well, Löw isn't much better usually.

Thoughtfully,
Ibex

He always does! One of his interviews was on the radio the other day and they played the Godfather team in the background  .

@Keswick, flags galore! I know  . My little girl wanted to wear her English sun cap to school today (like everyday) I don't think she even realises or even cares who won, anyway we replaced it with a Mickey Mouse hat instead

Take care,

@Caro,

yepp, I did mean it.

It makes me curious you "corrected" my statement in some way because i always thought "did get" or "got" was the same (just as many other verbs), so there is my question why is it then wrong to say "didn't they" afterwards, since it basically means the same, doesn't it..?

aaand @duckduck ;)

Yepp, I do agree with you. My style of writing is surely not the best.
But I also can't help in some way though (already trying my very best, you see ^.^) , it is just because my cousins and the rest of my family live in Canada, which means every time we meet up once or twice a year I somehow get more used to the way they talk to each other...
and hell yea, I could probably start using not this many dots as I am noticing right now.

hope you guys are able to forgive me once more ;o) haha ^_^

there we go..
C you

Oh bless :) .

@panic22:
Eeh, that's a bad excuse to talk / write in a bad style :P . Cursing / using bad words speaks of a low mind, that's what my mom taught me when I was a child. We all curse, I am no exception, and we all use words when we're with friends that we would not use in public. And that's the point, you see. Your cousins might talk in a certain style and if they use certain words a lot, they certainly don't mind you using them either. But that does not mean that you get away with using these words with other people. I can use the F word when talking to my husband, but I certainly can't use it when talking to my boss. Do you know what I mean?

Sure, I forgive you :D ..

I wasn't trying to correct you panic, I was just a wee bit confused, because of what you wrote, before writing "got their ass kicked" today, didn't they..? It somehow didn't fit together, but I sussed it out in the end. :prost:

Hi Keswick :prost: , luv,
and they played the Godfather team??? theme, maybe??? in the background

It's sooooo hot here, I can't believe it.

We watched the match with a lot of friends. I was the only one cheering for England - didn't have a lot to do, though... :(. But the Union Jack is still waving in the wind and I will not take it down so soon. Well, to be honest, I put it up for my English garden party initially, but now I will make a point of letting it fly.
I can't really understand people making this game into a matter of life and death. After all, no team could ever win if there wasn't a losing team as well, right?

Cheers

 Haha, flower, yes they played the THEME, not the team.. unless the Mafia have their own football team??

It is nice and warm here, 21 degrees, bit overcast and the ususal wind. Quite nice. We had 24 degress yesterday, bright sunshine.. unbelievable! I must have travelled to a different country over night without noticing it!

Some people consider football their religion and yes for them it is a matter of life or death. I can't understand them but I let them get on with it, as long as they don't bother me. The only things that bothers me is that during the World Cup you're always completely reduced to your nationality, aren't you? During the last World Cup I told a colleague off who only referred to me as "the German". He started it as soon as the matches started and would not stop until after the finals. I love the 4-years-break between the world cups  .

Oh Duckduck, I feel like I have to share a debate with you.. about the Union Flag. Paul and I had this discussion shortly after we got together and I have never forgotten it since. A jack is a common name for a flag, however the Union Jack is used solely by seamen and only if you fly the flag on a ship, you may call it Union Jack, all others are called Union Flag. .... it's not like I gave a lot about it, but I thought I might share this knowledge with you so you can either forget it straight away or keep it in mind for games like "Who wants to be a millionaire" .

Hi panic,
of course I agree with Keswick about not using certain words in "public". But what I wanted to tell you in the first place is that the sheer number of colloquialisms you use in one single sentence marks you as a non-native speaker. It's your overdoing it, you know? May I show you, please!?

There we go.
C you
-"but" und "though" sind doppeltgemoppelt. Entweder: "But somehow I can't help it..." oder "I can't help myself, though..."
-"also" macht für mich in diesem Zusammenhang gar keinen Sinn.
Du könntest doch vielleicht schreiben: "whenever we meet - once or twice a year - ...". :big_thumb:

Oops, this is in German now! No matter, can't be bothered to write it all again.

Best wishes,

Duckduck

@Keswick,

by all means, share your knowledge with me. :freu:

I had absolutely no idea about this and it is a very interesting detail I will keep in mind from now on. I love these little tidbits of information. It's always great to come out with them - showing off to the hundreds of sailors I might meet in coming years .

Well, 21 degrees, ey? That's not really a lot, is it? WE do much better over here in good old Ger.... Shouldn't we start a new competition? "Championship of Temperatures and Wind Strengths"! And the winner gets a sunstroke and the loser is cool and comfortable? :spin:

All the best :prost:

Oh 21 degrees is a lot for Newcastle, the reason might be that I have a 10 minute walking distance from the office to the sea :D .

Yeah, lets have a new competition then. That's my weather forecast for this week where I work:

Monday: Sunny Intervals with light rain forecast for 22:00 / 23°C / Wind: West, South Westerly 14 kmh

Tuesday: Sunny Intervals with light rain forecast for 04:00 / 22°C / Wind: West North Westerly 14 kmh

Wednesday: Sunny Intervals / 23°C / Wind: East South Easterly 8kmh

Thursday: White Cloud / 22°C / Wind: South South Easterly 19kmh

Friday: Light Rain / 21°C / Wind: Southerly 23 kmh

(Source: www.bbc.co.uk/weather Location: NE1)

I live a bit further North but there is no big difference. And yes, that's what I call SUMMER in the Northeast of England! :big_thumb:

Love from the Tyne, Keswick

Hey everyone!

Well, I hope that either Spain or Argentina wins!
That means I think Germany won't be able to win against Argentina today.

Peace
snarly!

PS: I don't support Germany because I'm Austrian.

Well, I think Argentina just had a bad day.
I still hope that Spain will put an end to this lucky streak!
