In the short history "The Way up to Heaven" by Roald Dahl it is about a married couple, the Fosters, in the seventies. She wants to visit their daughter and the grandchildren in Paris. Mrs. Foster is a woman who panics about missing something, for example the airplane or the train. Everything must run for plan. As well the trip to her daughter. Her husband, a rather comfortable type, comes along about this hectic rush and only makes fun of his wife, actually. Mrs. Foster waits in the hall below for her husband and asks constantly for the time in the fear they could miss the flight to Paris. Then sometime Mr. Foster comes down and when Mrs. Foster sit for a long time in the car and exclaims after him, nevertheless, he should hurry up, he looks rather in the sky and says to his wife that she can forget the flight because there gathers certainly a thick fog. Mrs. Foster is in the steady conviction that she flies today. Finally, at the airport she runs around to the counter for her baggage to surrender, then she hears the information the flight is cancelled for the moment because of the heavy fog. Mrs. Foster runs to her man and tells him about the cancelled flight. He is not surprised and means to go home again. However, Mrs. Foster rather stays at the airport for the case the flight, nevertheless, would finally fly that day. Thus, she makes it herself comfortable on a bank. She asks constantly the staff when the flight would go. When the staff answers that it would be at 11 o’clock in the morning, Mrs. Foster resolves finally to go home. She calls her man to send her the chauffeur. When she arrives at home, her husband comes to her and says ironically how it was in Paris. Mrs. Foster only reacts by saying that the flight will go the next morning at 11 o’clock and that they will leave their home at 9 o’clock.

The next morning the car stays on time at 9 o’clock in front of the door. When Mr. Foster comes down the stairs, there is also Mrs. Foster again in her fear she could miss the flight. She just says to her husband he should draw his coat and point in the car. He is not ready. Thus he goes in the direction of car, however, looks again in the sky and points afterwards in the car. All at once Mr. Foster searches her coat pockets. Mrs. Foster asks him what he is looking for and he answers he is looking for a present. She asks what present he means. Mr. Foster answers he will not go without this box, he goes out the car and goes once more to the house. Mrs. Foster looks at the place of her husband and sees the white wrapped up box and shouts after him, but he is already in the house. Then she asks the chauffeur for going to her husband and saying he should stop searching. The Chauffeur goes to door, comes back to the car and reports that the front door is closed. Mrs. Foster becomes bit by bit crossly rummaged about the situation and runs by herself to the front door, puts the key in the key hole. When she just wants to turn round, she hears a noise, as fossilized she stands in the door. After a few seconds she takes out the key and goes to the car, telling the chauffeur to drive, otherwise she misses the flight. Finally, she flies with a fine feeling sitting in the airplane and glad to leave New York.

In Paris, she writes her man every Tuesday a letter which contains how much she misses him and that he should not forget to eat. After exactly 6 weeks she flies home again. Nobody waits for her at the airport, so she orders a taxi and drives home. When she stands in front of the house door, nobody opens her, she rings the door bell once more, but nothing happens again.
At the end of the short story, she gets her front door key out and opens the door. The first thing she sees is a gigantic heap of full post. When she further goes into the apartment, there comes a strange smell. It is an open end, so it is lies to the reader’s imagination what happened while Mrs. Foster stayed in Paris.

Mrs. Foster wants to visit their daughter and the grandchildren in Paris. She is a woman whom the mere idea of being too late for something - like an airplane or a train - throws into panic. Everything must go according to plan. The trip to her daughter is no exception. Her husband, a rather comfortable type, has grown used to this hectic rush and only makes fun of his wife, actually. Mrs. Foster waits for her husband in the hall below and keeps asking constantly for the time, fearing they could miss the flight to Paris. Then, finally, Mr. Foster comes down. Mrs. Foster has sat in the car for a long time by then and shouts at him to hurry up. He looks at the sky and says to his wife that she can forget about the flight because a thick fog is gathering for certain. Mrs. Foster is absolutely convinced that she will fly today. Finally, at the airport she rushes to the counter to check in her luggage, but then she hears the information that the flight has been cancelled for the moment due to heavy fog. Mrs. Foster runs back to her husband and tells him about the cancelled flight. He is not surprised and wants to go home again. However, Mrs. Foster would rather stay at the airport just in case.... Thus, she makes it herself comfortable on a bench. She constantly asks the staff when the plane will start. When the staff finally answers that it will go at 11 o’clock in the morning, Mrs. Foster decides to go home. She calls her husband and tells him to send her the chauffeur. When she arrives at home, her husband comes to her and asks her ironically how Paris was. Mrs. Foster only reacts by saying that the flight will go on the next morning at 11 o’clock and that they will leave their home at 9 o’clock.

On the next morning the car is in front of the door exactly at 9 o’clock. When Mr. Foster comes down the stairs, there she is, also Mrs. Foster, again in a panic that she could miss the flight. She tells her husband to put on his coat and points at the car. He is not ready. Thus he goes in the direction of car, however, looks again in the sky and points afterwards in the car. All at once Mr. Foster searches her coat pockets. Mrs. Foster asks him what he is looking for and he answers he is looking for a present. She asks what present he means. Mrs. Foster becomes bit by bit crossly rummaged about the situation and runs by herself to the front door, puts the key in the key hole. Dieser Teil ist, meiner Meinung nach, etwas zu lang und ausführlich geraten. Ich schlage Kürzung vor: When he finally is in the car he starts searching for something in his pockets. Mrs. Foster is angry but he says that he will not go without the present. He gets out again and heads towards the house. Mrs. Foster is frantic by now and sends the chauffeur to call him back. But he is already in the house and the door is closed. She gets out herself and runs to the door and puts the key into the lock.
Just about to open the door, she suddenly hears a noise and stands thunderstruck. After a few seconds she takes out the key, goes to the car, and tells the chauffeur to drive, as otherwise she would miss her flight. Finally, she is sitting in the airplane and glad to leave New York.

In Paris she writes her husband a letter on every Tuesday and tells him how much she misses him and that he should not forget to eat. After exactly 6 weeks she flies home again. Nobody waits for her at the airport, so she orders a taxi and drives home. When she stands in front of the house door, nobody opensher, she rings the door bell once more, but again nothing happens.
At the end of the short story, she gets her front door key out and opens the door. The first thing she sees is a gigantic heap of mail. When she goes into the apartment, she notices a strange smell. The story has an open end, so the answer to the question what happened while Mrs. Foster stayed in Paris is left to the reader’s imagination.
Wow, langer Text!
