Re: What brought you here?
Hello everyone,
I've found the webside of englisch-hilfen some weeks ago. My purpose to join this forum was to improve my english knowledge. I have to read a lot of english documents and tutorials on my job ( working in computer science ). I think I can understand the meanings behind if I read a english document so far but the problem is if I have to become active in english. Means if I write soemthing or need to speak with an english support. Speaking is the biggest problem, cause there is not enough time to search of the right vocabulary on leo.org In conclusion I think it's my active wordpool where I still have to work with. But that's not all. The correct using of prepositions and ask the correct question form ( Open Question, Subject Question, Question ending with Prepositions ) is very difficult for me (and so on... ). My knowledge based more on "learning by doing" what's not the best way I think. So, what do you think how to (re)start learning english.
Best regards
Michael

Re: What brought you here?
hi there
so your husband is a geordie...i love the geordie accent do you speak english with a german accent or accent free?? or maybe even geordie-english with a german accent.. that would be pretty cool..
I live in Lübeck, i guess you've heard of it? I think it's a really nice place (well don't suppose I'd have stayed here so long if I thought otherwise ) The reason I asked you if you speak english with an accent is because I myself, even tho I've been in germany for 17 years now, still have an english accent when I speak german... I speak good german but there is no way I can do it without sounding english.. LOL!!
anyway, I'll say bye for now..my kids are driving me nuts so I'm off to sort them out..

Re: What brought you here?
I speak proper Gerdie... *g*... German Geordie. Well in fact my husband is convinced that my accent does not sound German but French?! No idea why .. my husband says my accent is far too soft for a German. Ah well.. could be worse, I could sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now that would be a hard accent, wouldn't it? I personally think you'll never completely get rid of your accent and there is nothing bad about that, as far as I am concerned. It makes you unique and I personally love British people speaking German. I think it sounds wonderful!

What brought you here?
Firstly in order to get some answer for my special questions, but also for improving my English.
At the moment I am spending my time in Canada. I have been here for 2 month and I am gonna be here till end of January. Since I have arrived here I have almost always question about the language. However unfortunately the people cannot anwser my questions sometimes. But I want to speak a really good english and not a easy english as the people here speak.
@Keswick
I saw may corrections of you in English and in German. It is amazing how good you are in both languges above all in German. You do not use German quite often but you can correct it very well. How do you do this?

Gerdie.. lol...I bet it sounds wonderful...
I think you're right about never completely getting rid of your accent, but as you say... it sort of makes you unique.. From my experiences here in Germany I find it more of a positive thing than a negative one... it seems that a lot (not all) of Germans are fascinated with the English language (lucky for me..hee hee) When I'm at home with my kids I try to speak English because I think it's a great advantage for them to speak both languages fluently... I say 'try' because with the fact that I've been here so long & speak German 'outside' all the time...at work etc... I find myself speaking mixed sentences at home... it just sort of happens.... lol... so you could say I speak 'Dinglish' (Deutsch-Englisch) My eldest son who is 14 thinks this is hilarious & now speaks 'Dinglish' just for the fun of it..
Do you come back & visit Germany often? The last time I was in England was about 3 years ago...

@ britingermany:
I mix up my sentences every now and again.. or I struggle with finding a word, reply to my husband in German, whose German is getting better but he still struggeling with understanding it when I speak quickly or in my local dialect. But is he is getting the hang of it .
I try to go to Germany every 2 years. I was in Germany in summer and will go back next year to attend my sister's wedding, in 2010 I will go to celebrate my dad's 60th. So it's not quite every 2 years really .

Re: What brought you here?
Hello
The first thing that brought me here, was to improve my english. I am visiting an english course at the VHS and that brings a lot of fun. But I'm looking for something more.
I'm very interested in the english every day life. And who would believe it, I'm interested in how to cook english meals. It would be great to find people who want to share my interests.

Re: What brought you here?
Hi everyone,
my name is Tobias and I live near Frankfurt/Main.
I´m student in engineering. Before that, I was in german armee and made an apprenticeship. In this 6 years I had no stimulation to learn english, but now, I have to, because I want to pass the "master" after my Bachelor. Therefor I have to learn.
I started to read "The immortal Nicolas Flamel" a childbook from Michael Scott. It´s the first one of a series of 5 books. I wondered how much I understood, when I started to read. It makes much fun to read and I´m looking forward to read the next one
I don´t know waht Í am learning, when I read english books but I continue. The next days I want to watch some english movies, like "The last unicorn" or "finding Nemo"
My hobbies are flyfishing and geocaching, cooking and reading.
I would like to talk english but I don´t know with who.
Greetings
Tobias the geocacher
