Helen Keller
I am writing about Helen Keller. She was an American writer who was born in 1880 in Alabama. When she was 19 months old, she got a scarlet fever and as a result of this she was blind and deaf. After a while she stopped making noises. At this time, people thought that deaf-blinds were not able to feel or understand something and are mentally retarded.

Helen tried to communicate with hand signs but nobody understood her and she got outbursts of fury which increased over the years. She became a very difficult child. She terrorized the whole family and smashed dishes or pieces of furniture.

Helen’s mother visited a specialist doctor to ask for advice. The doctor suggested to contact Perkins School to find a teacher for Helen. Helen’s mother contacted this school and employed Anne Mansfield as teacher when Helen was 7 years old. When Anne was a child, she was blind and visited 'Perkins blind school'. But she completely recovered from her illness.

Anne had an unlimited patience and taught Helen Keller the finger spelling alphabet. As an example. She gave Helen a cake in her hand and with her another hand Anne explained the word ‘cake’ in the finger alphabet. At first she had not understood that every sign had a meaning. It took a few times to understand the fact that everything had a name. First world she understood was ‘water’.

She was very intelligent, had a fabulous language feeling and learned fast. She visited the Blind Institute and had been taught the Braille and to write on a special typewriter. Even though she studied at the Radcliffe College and finished her studies with a distinction as Doctor of Philosophy, her teacher Anne was in the class room and translated the lessons in the finger spelling alphabet at all times.

She wrote several books with a significant autobiographical character. She wanted to reassure her readers and give hope to those which had difficulties in a dark and noiseless world. Especially the novel 'The story of my life' from 1903 is a famous book of Helen Keller.

By the end of her life she said: "I am blind but I can see; I am deaf but I can hear".
Helen Keller passed away in 1968 at the age of 88.

Helen Keller

I am writing about Helen Keller. She was an American writer who was born in 1880 in Alabama.
When she was 19 months old
she suffered from scarlet fever and as a result of this she was blind and deaf.

At this time
people thought that deaf-blinds were not able to feel or understand anything and were mentally retarded.

Helen tried to communicate with hand signs, but nobody understood her.
This lead to
outbursts of fury which increased over the years.
So she became a very difficult child.
and terrorized her whole family by smashing dishes or destroying pieces of furniture.

Then Helen’s mother visited a specialist doctor to ask for advice. The doctor suggested to contact Perkins School to find a specialised teacher for Helen. Her mother contacted this school and employed Anne Mansfield as Helen's teacher when she was seven years old.

When Anne was a child, she was blind too and attended 'Perkins School for the Blind',
but she completely recovered from her illness.

Anne also suffered from blindness during her childhood.
She attended
'Perkins School for the Blind' and completely recovered from her illness.

Anne taught Helen Keller the finger spelling alphabet with unlimited patience.
One of her teaching methods was to give Helen something to hold in one hand
and to use her other hand to form the sign language.

She gave Helen a cake in her hand and with her other hand Anne explained the word ‘cake’ in the finger alphabet. At first she did not understood that every sign had a meaning and referred to a single character. It took a few times until Helen realised that everything had a name. The first word she understood was ‘water’.

Helen was very intelligent, had a fabulous language feeling and learned fast. She visited the Blind Institute and had been taught the Braille system and to write on a special typewriter. She even studied at the Radcliffe College and finished her studies with distinction and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Anne, her teacher, was always present in the class room and translated the lectures in the fingerspelling alphabet.

Helen also wrote several books with significant autobiographical character.
