Summary of the German text “Utopia – Alternativ leben im indischen Auroville”

On 7 May 2007 the author of the following article “Utopia-Alternativ leben im indischen Auroville” published in”Rita Erben für Kulturzeit” on 3sat.online is about Auroville. The city is named after the thinker Sri Aurobinde. But it is not an ordinary city, it’s something special. It was founded in 1968 and has been supported by the UNESCO and the Indian government. It is an ideal township whose purpose is to realize human unity in diversity. Today Auroville is recognized as the first and only internationally supported ongoing experiment in human unity, equality and transformation of consciousness. It should be a model project standing for peace and understanding among nations. The 2 thousand inhabitants don’t be reigned by a central government but they are so autonomic that they can make own decisions directly in the plenary meeting. There are no courts, prisons and policemen. One of the cofounders, Mira Alfassa, died in 1973 described the ideal city as a spiritual place which belongs to no one. Simultaneously the special representative of the Indian government Esther Patel stresses that in the 20th century the human spirit develop incredibly. Mankind reached great achievements in science and technology. But by following rational principles we would be confronted with limits. “At a certain point”, she believes,”we should find an awareness which overtop our spirit.” “The Auroville project is based on socialistic beliefs”, explains an Italian inhabitant called Luigi Zanzi living since 25 years in Auroville. The reason for his decision was the fact that he was an “adventurer”. Zanzi was so unhappy with the ideals and virtues which are spread by religions and ideologies that he decided to move to Auroville. Even the revolutionary beliefs of the 68-generation didn’t satisfy him. When he came to India he noticed by which spirituality he was overwhelmed. He claims that there is no private possession and no chance for self-improvement which may threaten social stability. The main primary aim is to shelter the concept of equality among the population. Everything belongs to the society, even the wages are paid homogenously. It doesn’t matter if you are a teacher, doctor or an administrative official.
The concept of “habitation without ownership” is coordinated by a commissioner of the Housing Service Klein-Rex who comes from Germany. It seems to work very easy but there are strict rules which require hard work and social engagement. You have to live together and not in little devices. Although the criteria for admission are very strict the list of would-be inhabitants becomes increasingly longer. But if you are accepted you get the lifelong right to live there.
Nearly 40 per cent of the companies’ sales are used for the free services of the community, such as education, health and culture. Even people from Sri Lanka, particularly Tamils can visit the International School in Auroville. The functionaries always place a high value on education. Beside education Tamils are also allowed to work in the 70 firms of Auroville. Auromode is a good example which employs roughly 200 people, particularly from Sri Lanka. Overall 5000 Tamils work in Auroville. Just so that such a cosmopolitan experiment exists in a globalized world where the clash of civilizations rules our everyday life it is supported by subventions by the European Union, the UNESCO and the Indian government.
