Hallo!

After the war the cemetery was in beggary. With the aerial attacks in the years 1943 to 1945 the bombs and explosion mine destroyed or damaged a large number of gravestones. Remains of the bombed houses fell on the near lying tiling of the Portuguese part.

But a big part of the damages accrued after the war; by the air pollution and by the use of fertilizer, by vandalism and by vibration of the S-Bahn-traffic

I don't know if this is allowed, but I just wanted to add something to what Keswick posted.

After the war the cemetery was in a very desolate condition. During the air attacks between/of(preference) the years 1943 to 1945, the bombs and mines destroyed or damaged a large number of gravestones. Remains of the bombed houses fell on the nearby tomb slabs of the Portuguese part of the cemetery(otherwise the sentence sound incomplete).
But a big part of the damage(referencing to the cemetery as a whole) occurred after the war; because of air pollution and because ofthe use of fertilizer, also by vandalism and the shock of the near by railroads.

Most of the corrections were just preference, or simply makes the article sound more fluent.
Sorry if were not allowed to do this, just trying to help.

Vielen Danke!!!

Nochmals Danke, Danke, Danke…

Another big distinguishing mark between the Sephardic and the Ashkenazic graves is the pictorial representation and configuration of a gravestone, which is at the Sephardic graves more often and more intensive marked than at the Ashkenazic ones. The grave is richly ornamented with a lot of little decorative artworks or pictorial elements.

But there are not only single symbols, which are decorating the grave. Figurative scenes are widely spread, although it’s traditionally not allowed. At this the Christian factor is not excluded. Some of the scenes resting upon biblical texts. You can also find family coat of arms and embodiments of animals.
For example an embodiment of a pelican. The pelican, feeding its youngster, stands for the tradition of mother love. Therefore it is often represented on gravestones of women.

In the Jewish grave art are also motifs, which can’t be explained by the Jewish tradition. They own in fact a universal value of symbol and existing also in the Christian grave art.

The vanitas and death symbols are meant. Vanitas symbols are showing, that the human can’t keep the life under control and that everything is evanescent. To these symbols of evanescence counts for example: the hourglass, which shows the trickle off of the time and the skull.
