I have no idea,but I have a correction for something else namely your translation of Schießgewehr as machine gun. In modern German the word the word has mostly fallen out of use and it has been replaced by Gewehr and means any manually operated long firearms, i.e. rifles, muskets, carbines, machine guns etc. Historically though, the term "Gewehr" or "Wehr" meant a personal weapon of any kind (comparable to the use of arms in English at the same time). As this included swords and pikes and such firearms were called Schießgewehr to distinguish them from weapons without the abilitiy to shoot.

Das trifft sich gut, denn ich habe "auf zwei Augen stellen" gegoogelt und gefunden bei: Hans Schemann: Deutsche Idiomatik: Wörterbuch der deutschen Redewendungen im Kontext, S. 46.

edmonts Vermutung ist richtig: es bedeutet etwas allein, als einziger zu tun.
Eine sehr viel üblichere Redewendung wäre im Deutschen heutzutage aber "in eine Hand legen", z.B. Verantwortung.

I translated verlassen wir as "we depended" -- but I suppose it should be present tense, "we depend" or "we rely".

ich würde da wohl sogar sagen "...we are depending/relying on..." um das "vorläufig" (for the time being) - das ja ausdrückt, dass wir es tatsächlich im Moment noch tun - mit zu erwischen.
