I think I've figured this out so no need to answer -- halten Ton -- the sentence uses the idea of singing in tune as a metaphor.

It's not actually metaphorical but a very common use of "in etw. halten" where etwas is a tone, mode, color etc.

For example, "ein in dunklen Farben gehaltener Raum" is "a room that is painted in/dominated by dark colors".
