The context from which the German sentence below comes seems to indicate that Philipp Mittwich joined the "Bewegung" mentioned in the sentence. But I haven't found in any of several online dictionaries a use of gestoßen that might mean "joined" -- though perhaps "tumbled to" could work. Is there any way that gestoßen below could mean something like "joined"?
...with Philipp Mittwich -- er war Delegierter Württembergs auf dem ersten Rätekongreß -- war zudem ein bekannteres USPD-Mitglied zur Bewegung gestoßen.
Thank you for any assistance.

Re: question about a use of gestoßen
It's the Perfect of
zu jemandem/etwas (Dative) stoßen
This does indeed mean join. I'm not sure where this would be listed in a dictionary.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Re: question about a use of gestoßen
Thank you, tiorthan! I see my error. I looked in dictionaries for uses of gestoßen. I should have looked instead for uses of stoßen. I found "join" right away.
