Artificial snow making uses up valuable resources and is bad for the environment.
The water for the snow making often comes from nearby lakes or streams. But that doesn´t mean that the water is clean. In a ski resort in Colorado they use water from the Snake River, and the water is tainted with zinc, copper and other metals.
They add chemicals in the water to optimize snowmaking. These chemicals allowing the water to freeze at a lower temperature. The chemical composition of the water used for the production of artificial snow is a danger as spring- and drinking water contains much more minerals than rain and snow
Artificial snow making has also an impact on wildlife. For example, artificial snow has an influence on the vegetation period, regeneration, and the stability of forest stands. So plant growth is delayed because artificial snow rests two to three weeks longer on the slope than natural snow. And the soil temperature under the artificial and natural snow cover is different.
