Well you have to keep in mind, that Monty Python was filmed in the 60's, humour was different then and using the Nazi theme was a lot more common then than it is nowadays.

You are living in the UK right?
Can you tell me what British think of Germany in general and how the Nazi topic is presented in the British media and comedy? And what about national pride?
It interested me.
I was only once in England because of a student exchange and I had bad experiences in London. Some English teens found out, that we are Germans, when I began to talk in German with some of my classmates. Then they shouted "Hitler", "Nazi" and "scheiße" too us. This was almost 5 years ago.

Yes, I have been living in the UK for quite some time now, and my husband is English, too.

I personally only had one bad experience with neighbours who were too stupid to walk a straight line. All other experiences were good. People (especially the elderly) are very interested in the German culture (they all love the beer! :) ) and what I do tend to hear a lot are things like "The Germans! Brilliant engineers" :D . Germans are considered very well organised, very strict and hard-working.

However, I would say it depends on who you speak to. Lower class people and yellow press tend to bring up the Nazi topic over and over again. Like I said, I had a bad experience with neighbours in the past but what you have to keep in mind is, that those media and those people are not very intelligent, and very poorly educated. They would shout Nazi at a German, as much as they would shout Paki at a Pakistani, Chink at a Chinese or Jockey at a Scottish person. Uneducated people (and media) always fire at either nationality or a nation's history. I am sorry for your bad experience, but those children (and children are cruel!) do not reflect the majority of England. Stick to the educated people and you won't have to listen to rubbish.

What did the neighbours do?
And what about the young people?
I have a Peruvian boyfriend, who almost speaks German perfectly, because he attended a German school in Peru in Arequipa and he didn't want to believe me that I don't like beer, because I'm German. He couldn't imagine, that there are Germans, who don't like beer. He drinks plenty of beer especially German beer and he finds it weird that we drink carbonate water.

Yes you are right. I don't generalize, because of some bad experiences, but it's annoying, if you encounter such idiots, who insult you, because of your nationality.

My neighbours shouted Heil H**ler all the time, and things like "Shoot the Germans" and what not. Not very pleasant to be honest. As you can imagine, my husband (back then we only just got together) went off it!

Young people (unless they are uneducated) don't really care about nationalities anymore. They ask where you're from but that's all. The people I socialise with are aged 20 to 50 and they see people as people, not as nationalities ;)

It is and it's a shame that this happens everywhere in the world. It really shouldn't matter, should it?

Sarcasm is completely unknown to the British... as is tea, fish & chips, queuing and the Sunday afternoon pint. What a sad place we live in, ey?

I know, right :big_thumb: . It's so sad to be surrounded by people hiding under massive black umbrellas, pushing a tea drip around everywhere they go, grumbling about the EU, WWII and "them bloody foreigners!" into their ginger beards. What a place to live in...!!!
