@Delfino: I always capitalise TV being an abbreviation.. why is that wrong?

@Zurn:

I love films and TV series :D !

Currently I enjoy watching the TV series Game of Thrones, Defiance, Lost Girl, Dr Who (all time fave for years now), Sherlock Holmes (with Benedict Cumberbatch) and for the comedy factor Vicious (got to love Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi!) and the Vicar of Dibley. Just to name a few of my favourites. I know it sounds like it but no, I am not sitting in front of the TV all day ;-) . As you can see, I like different genres of TV series from drama to sci-fi. I am quite eclectic really and watch whatever takes my fancy.

As for films I loved the Hobbit which I thought was brilliantly made (despite the fact that some of my friends claim that I only went for Richard Armitage, which is not true.. much :spin:) and the latest Star Trek film was not bad at all either. I also like the film Withnail and I which is a cult classic from the 80's (and quite unknown to the world outside the UK to be fair). I generally like British films, from comedy dramas like Marygold Hotel or Calendar Girls and historical films like North & South to Guy Richie's classics such as Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels.

I capitalise TV too, but I was trying to refer to these movie genres:

Oh yes, unfortunately I saw it in German language at last (before I was started to improve my English).
But i will try to see in English soon.
I think, it`ll be difficult because of the Cockney Slang, which was used in Guy Ritchie movies.
Some of the rhymes I have locked in my brain.

"loaf" (of bread) instead of "head"
"trouble" (and strife) instead of "wife"
nigel (mansell) instead of "cancel"

Even for a native-speaker hard stuff, isn´t it?

It's the same in German. Have you ever heard a word and thought ... no ... she/he haven't said it really... ?
I did!

I like Cockney rhyming slang :) My husband uses it sometimes and more often than not I have to look at him and admit that I didn't get it... my husband is not even from London!

Let me think of a few examples:

apples and pears = stairs
I don't Adam and Eve it = I don't believe it
dog and bone = phone

I have just noticed.. most of the phrases I know are actually rude.... so I better not share them here.

Och...I´m interested. :D

I think it´s funny, what the actors always say in "Sons of Anarchy".

What the f*ck is going on?
What the f*ck is wrong with you?
Are you f*cking kidding me?

The three standard sentences, you heard in the tv series.

Ah....these are a few examples about Cockney you can find in the www (explained in German).

Beispiele:
  • statt "cancel" (absagen) - reimt sich auf "Nigel Mansell" (britischer Formel I Pilot) - sagt man " I had to nigel my holidays"
  • statt head (Kopf) – reimt sich auf loaf of bread (ein Laib Brot) – sagt man loaf, z. B. Use yer loaf!
  • statt look (Blick) – reimt sich auf butcher's hook (Fleischerhaken) – sagt man butcher's, z. B. Have a butcher's!
I haven't seen you for donkeys.
  • statt feet (Füße) – reimt sich auf plates of meat (Fleischplatten) - sagt man My plates hurt. (gemeint: Meine Füße tun weh.)
  • statt pocket (Tasche) - reimt sich auf sky rocket (Himmelsrakete) - sagt man it's in my sky rocket (gemeint: Es ist in meiner Tasche)
  • statt go (gehen) - reimt sich auf Scapa Flow (war ein Marinestützpunkt in der gleichnamigen Bucht bei den südlichen Orkneyinseln) - sagt man to scarper (gemeint: abhauen)
  • statt tely (Fernseher) - reimt sich auf Lisa Minelli - sagt man I'm watching the lisa (gemeint: ich schaue fern)

"statt " "Phone" - Dog and bone

I have two example for a kind of North East rhyming slang (and yes, they're rude):

I'm Danny Glucked
Tom Tit

I leave the guessing to you :D

It's not surprising that most of the rhyming slang you know is more or less vulgar. It's most often used for terms that are inappropriate or even taboo.

Funny thing is that you'll sometimes even find rhyming slang of rhyming slang. Bryson Bill (1990) cites "aris" as a term for "arse". "Aris" being the first part of "Aristotle" which rhymes with "bottle" which is the first part of "bottle and glass".
You're never too old to learn something stupid.
