School in Great Britain

Beitrag von Valentine »

Hi,

I am going to live some time in England, so I got some questions.

First of all I'm interested on the English school system.
Are there fees on visiting English schools?
When are there holidays in England?
Do all the pupils have to wear school uniforms?

I hope, someone can help me.

1. Only independent and private schools charge fees. The amount depends on the school and the area, but the current average is around £3,400 per term. The average for boarding schools is around £7,800 per term.

2. The school holidays also depend on the school and the area. For example, the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council holidays for 2013/14 are as follows:

Autumn Term
Begin of Term: 2 Sept 2013
Half Term: 28 Oct - 1 Nov
End of Term: 20 Dec 2013

Spring Term
Begin of Term: 6 Jan 2014
Half Term: 17 Feb - 21 Feb
End of Term: 4 Apr 2014

Summer Term
Begin of Term: 22 Apr 2014
Half Term: 26 May - 30 May
End of Term: 18 July 2014

If you let me know where you will be staying, i.e. which Council I can find the term information for you.

3. School uniforms and their rules depend on the governing body of the school, however a general rule is that students in higher classes do not always have to wear school uniforms. You as a guest student probably won't have to wear one.

If there is anything else you would like to know, give me a shout ;-)

My husband has to work in Dungeness, that is situated in Kent.
We hope to find a house to rent in Rye, that is East Sussex.

Our children are 16 an 14 years old, and they should go to school there.

We are leaving Germany this autumn, in October.

It isn't easy to go to school in England! Up to now we only have denials from the schools we contacted.

Any tipps how to get a place at school?

I am afraid I do not have children of school age (yet) but have you checked this website from the Government yet? That might help you:

Do they give any reason/explanation as to why they do not accept your children? Do they not enroll new students at the moment or are there any documents missing?

The school nearest at our house told us, they have already five pupil too much in the class.

Another school said, the children cannot do any qualification there and that is why they don't want them.
But it isn't necessary, that they do any qualification.

We vetoed that decision.

Did you go to your Council and asked for advice on the local school enrollment procedure? They might be able to help you, even with your veto.

... and we succeded at last.

The 14 year old girl visits the school nearby, although they told us to have too much students in the classes.
And her 16 year old brother is at a school in Kent, he has to go by bus there and needs more than an hour for his way to school.
He attends 6th Form and he is very happy there, because he was allowed to choose his subjects.

Both are there as "visitors", not as regular pupil or student. So they don't have to do the examinations.
