I think it's ment to go away after you clicked on it. because after you did it, beneath the post there will be writen that you would like to thank the author of said post. does it makes sense?

It's a way to help readers to focus on the posts with added content,
to reduce the spread of a thread over several pages and it also
avoids a rising post counter just by saying thanks every time.
The post couter is used to automatically categorise users into the user groups
(Bilingual Newbie - Lingo Whiz) depending on their activity.
