Hier soll an einem Beispielsatz dargestellt werden, wie Zeitformen die Bedeutung eines Satzes verändern können. Der Satz: Ich spiele Fußball. wird in die wichtigtsten englischen Zeitformen gesetzt. Rechts siehst du, wie sich der Sinn des Satzes ändert.

Present Perfect I have just played football. das Fußballspielen wurde gerade beendet (ist auch vorbei, wichtig ist hier das Ergebnis, ich bin damit fertig, es interessiert überhaupt nicht, wann das war)
Present Perfect Progressive I have been playing football for 2 hours. seit 2 Stunden wird Fußball gespielt, jetzt immer noch
Past Perfect I had played football before Susan came. Ich hatte bereits Fußball gespielt, als Susan kam. (Hier werden die zwei Handlungen als einzelne Handlungen betrachtet, die aufeinanderfolgen. Ich war also bereits mit dem Fußballspielen fertig und bin froh, dass Susan danach kam.)
Past Perfect Progressive I had been playing football for two hours when Susan came. Ich hatte bereits zwei Stunden lang Fußball gespielt, als Susan kam. (Hier liegt die Betonung auf der Dauer des Fußballspielens. Ich wäre froh gewesen, wenn Susan das Spiel mit angesehen hätte, oder ich möchte betonen, dass das Spielen sehr lang gedauert hat).
will-future I will/shall play football next week. Nächste Woche wird Fußball gespielt (es kann aber auch noch etwas dazwischenkommen).
going to-future I'm going to play football this afternoon. Heute Nachmittag wird Fußball gespielt, das steht ziemlich fest, ich habe mir es vorgenommen.
Future Progressive I will/shall be playing football next Sunday. Nächsten Sonntag werde ich Fußball spielen (wie gewöhnlich).
Future Perfect I will/shall have played football by tomorrow. Bis morgen werde ich Fußball gespielt haben.
