be, have und do können Hilfsverben und Vollverben sein.
Sie haben vorwiegend grammatische Bedeutung, man benötigt sie zum Bilden von Zeitformen, von Fragen, des Passivs u.a.
Modalverben sind can, could, may, might, must, ought to, shall, should, will, would und need (need kann aber auch normales Verb sein).
Die Kenntnis von Modalverben ist für das Erlernen der englischen Sprache von besonderer Wichtigkeit, denn diese Wörter werden sehr häufig benutzt. Man kann mit ihnen Feinheiten in der Sprache ausdrücken.

| We will play football. | Wir werden Fußball spielen. |
| We would play football. | Wir würden Fußball spielen. |
| 1. | Sie werden nicht verwendet für Dinge, die definitiv geschehen oder nicht geschehen. | The sun rises in the East. - Hier kann kein Modalverb stehen. |
| 2. | Sie haben kein -s in der 3. Person Singular. | He can play football. |
| 3. | Fragen werden ohne do/does/did gebildet. | Can he speak Spanish? |
| 4. | Es folgt ein Vollverb im Infinitiv. | They must read the book. |
| 5. | Es gibt keine past Formen (außer could und would in einigen Fällen). Man benutzt für andere Zeitformen Ersatzformen. | He was allowed to watch the film. |
| 6. | Bei der Verwendung mit dem past particple wird über Dinge berichtet, die in der Vergangenheit nicht geschehen sind. | You should have told me. |
