Dialogue: That's just the way things are here

Joseph: Hi mom.

Mother: Hey, why are you crying? What's wrong with you?

Joseph: It was so terrible, mom. We wanted to eat something at a gas station, but the
manager kicked us. And we weren't allowed to go to the toilet like the whites. I had to
go to a outhouse somewhere in a cow field. And than,

Mother: Come here to me! Calm down and tell me what happened than!

Joseph: ... because Uncle Gus went wrong we were in the middle of the town. About 500
white people were standing around a person who was on fire. I heard the people
shouting, "Kill the nigger". Uncle Gus turned the car around, but they noticed us, get
to their cars and follow us. He turned the car headlights off, drove off road. Just in
time we were hidden. However, I was so scared that they find and kill us. After a long
Uncle Gus went on off the road. Fortunately, he found the right way and we got out of
this terrible town.
