Vocational English

Beitrag von erosenba »

Hi!

I'm an English teacher from Finland. I work in a vocational school and I try to teach as much vocational English as possible. The problem is that I haven't found any English sites where I would find exercises for my students. (chefs, drivers, builders, metalworkers, computer specialists, nurses and plumbers). Could anybody help me?

The best,

Elisabeth

Hi Elisabeth!

Well, I suppose it's no good me checking the internet yet again when you say that you couldn't find anything. I'm afraid there will be a lot of work in store for you. The only solution I see is to devise exercises yourself and use them in your classes. What you would need to do is check dictionaries for the relevant expressions and just "cut and paste", meaning: exchange the words in the exercises you want to use for vocational phrases. One comfort is that you can use the papers again and again.
In my experience, the main problem is to get the students to talk - no matter about what. But then I work with Germans who often don't know anything about English. Do you feel that there is a real difference between everyday English and vocational English - except for words and phrases of course? People in Finland can speak English, can't they? (I mean they learn the language in school). So it's more or less a question of teaching them the respective terminology, I would say.
Sorry, I wasn't a great help, I'm afraid...

Good luck says

Hi Elisabeth!
I'd recommend to get in touch with the teaching staff in similar facilities as yours
to share and improve the results of your work.
You can also try to use the library of a local university or technical/medical college
to find material for the development of vocational-specific ESL exercises.

The teaching professionals researched this topic for at least 30 years now
as described in this article http://www.jstor.org/pss/3586634
So you should try to build on their expertise...
