Big Ben

English
1. Big Ben is one of the most famous landmarks of London.
2. The tower has 5 bells.
3. Big Ben is the largest bell.
4. Big Ben is the bell and not the whole tower.
5. Today we say the whole tower is Big Ben.
6. Her weight is 13, 5 tons.
7. The tower has 4 dials.
8. A clock face has a diameter of 7 Centimeters.
9. The minute hand has a length of 4, 3 meters and the hour hand is 2, 7 meters long.
10. This makes it the second largest clock from Britain.
11. The clock is celebrating its 150th Birthday in May 2009.
12. In the tower is already the second bell.

History

1856
In London, the first bell by Whitechapel Bell Foundry has been poured.
Whitechapel Bell Foundry is a bell foundry.
The first bell weighed 17 tons and not 14 tons.
That was a huge mistake.
The bell was broken, because the hammer and the bell were too heavy.

1857
Then the consequence:
She is broken, because the hammer and the bell were too heavy.
The bell had a 2-meter-long crack.
She was melted down again.

1858
The bell was cast for the second time and installed in the tower.
The clock was on 31 May 1859 set in motion.

1859
But she got back a crack.
The bell was rotated so that the hammer could not strike the crack.
The weight of the hammer has been reduced.

The origin of the name Big Ben is not clearly proved.
There are two main theories:

First theory:
After Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works at the time of installation of the bell

Second theory:
After Ben Caunt, a boxer
He had his last fight in 1857.

Deutsch

Mai 1859 in Gang gesetzt.

1859

Erste Theorie:
Nach Sir Benjamin Hall, dem First Commissioner of Works zum Zeitpunkt der Installation der Glocke

Zweite Theorie:
Nachdem Ben Caunt, ein Boxer
Er hatte seinen letzten Kampf im Jahr 1857.

My topic for the presentation is Big Ben.
I chose the topic because I was interested in Big Ben and wanted to know more about it.
My presentation is structured in the 5 major points:
(Who is Big Ben?, Origin of the name Big Ben, General Information and History about the bell)
I'm playing a radio play by the bell at the end.

I come to the first point: Who is Big Ben?

I come to the second point: Origin of the name Big Ben

General information about the bell tower is my next point.

My last point is the History about the bell.

Now you hear Big Ben.

My presentation is finished.
I thank for your attention.

The weight of the bell is 13.5 tons. (Das sprichst Du dann "thirteen point 5 tons", wusstest Du schon, ne?)
The clock tower has a height of 96 meters.
The first 61 meters of the tower are made of brick with a limestone facade.
The head is made of cast iron.
The tower has 4 dials.
Every clock face has a diameter of 7 metres.
The minute hand has a length of 4 metres and the hour hand is 3 metres long.
The clock has a pendulum of 4 meters in length with a total weight of 300 kilos.
This makes it the second largest clock of Great Britain.
Inside the tower is a prison that was used until 1880.

The first bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry of London in 1856.
Whitechapel Bell Foundry is a bell foundry.
The first bell weighed 17 tons and not 13.5 tons.
That was a huge mistake and led to a serious consequence ( "led" ist Past Tense von "lead" = "leiten, führen":
The bell was cracked because the clapper and the bell were too heavy.
The crack in the bell was 2 metres long.
It was melted down again.
The bell was cast for the second time and installed in the tower.
The clock was set in motion in 1859.
