What does "lipplich" mean?

Beitrag von edmont »

I've come upon "Lipplicher Laffe" as a phrase for the practice of speech sounds, but does it mean anything?

In English there used to be the expression, "Don't give me any lip," meaning "don't talk back," or "don't be impertinent," "just do as you are told," etc.  So could "lipplicher Laffe" mean something like, "a fop who gives lip (who talks back, is impertinent)?" Or perhaps just a fop who talks too much?

However, lipplich is apparently used in a different way in 1841 in what seems to be German love poetry here and here.

Is "lipplich" simply turning lip into an adjective/adverb?

Thank you for any assistance.

Lipplich means "rosig" oder "füllig", so "lippliche Lippen" would mean "rosige/füllige Lippen", i.e. rosy/plump lips.

In your example however it is only used as a phrase for the practice of speech sounds. The translation would be "rosy/plump dandy" which doesn't really make much sense as such.

Keswick, thank you!

Is this an old word? I did not find it in five different dictionaries.

Yes, it's fairly old, Middle High German to early New High German.

Thank you, Keswick.
Do you happen to know of an online dictionary where I could look up words from those periods? Did you just already know "lipplich" -- or were you able to look it up somewhere?

I am afraid I don't know any "proper" online dictionaries but this website might be interesting: Mittelhochdeutsches Wörterbuch - I am afraid this isn't anywhere near complete though.

I have a dictionary at home that I sometimes use to look up old words. Mine fairly old as it's a remnant from my days at uni, but there might be newer editions available. It's called Mittelhochdeutsches Taschenwörterbuch by Matthias Lexer.
