The Project is about creating a RaspberryPi handheld console with a self made jump and run game. Basically our project is divided into two parts.
The first part is the hardware for the handheld console which is built from a RaspberryPi 3. A RaspberryPi is a linux based mini computer with 1.2 Ghz quad-core CPU, one gigabytes of RAM and a Broadcom VideoCore IV graphics chip which is enough to run our game. The RaspberryPi is the core piece of our handheld however, its not the only component. We also need a mini-display to see the game on our handheld,buttons to play the game,speaker for the sound and rechargeable batteries to make the console mobile. We are using special components made for the RaspberryPi, for example a LCD monitor, specifically made for the RaspberryPi. We still have to configure those components, to make them compatible to our RaspberryPi. When everything is done we also need a suitable case where everything fits in. This case will be made out of wood.
The second part is the creation of the game for the handheld console and configuration of the operating system for the RaspberryPi. We are going to install a console based linux operating system on the RaspberryPi and change and script it to create a simple linux operating system with a start menu to start our game.
The game will be a simple 2d jump and run platformer. It means you have to navigate a character throught different levels with different obstacles and enemies. The game will be similar to super Mario and Sonic the hedgehog. To create the game we are using the program language “Java” with the help of a framework called “libGDX”. A framework is an environment, where you are given a set of tools to work and code with. We are also going to use graphic programs like “Paint.net” and “GIMP” to create graphics for our game.
We have four weeks to realize and finish the project but we also have to do some preparation before we are able to start with the project. We need to buy every component for the handheld console and collect knowledge about libGDX and the configuration of the RaspberryPi.
