Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
No problem. I wanted to know if you think it might be possible someone takes him- or herself as a hostage.

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
Oh right I see! No, you wouldn't say that you took yourself hostage. Do you have some context or an example?

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
E.g. when someone tries to rob a bank or something like that but his altruistic way of thinking + seeing himself as an object he can use as a medium to blackmail others don't let him aTTACK OTHER people but himself. Got me?

Not quite...Guest12-15 hat geschrieben:Got me?
Let's recap. Someone altruistic robs a bank but rather than have the police attack the people around them, they'd have the police attack them? That doesn't make any sense to me, but maybe I'm just overthinking it?
Anyway, you would not say that you take yourself hostage, and I can't think of any context where you would.

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
Two things:
You typically say "take someone hostage" and not "as a hostage".
And, by definition, a hostage has to be a second party.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
I actually meant it metaphorically. I DO know that a hostage has to be a second, different person.
Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
But I mean something like : "Give me the complete amounts of money you've got , or I'll fill myself up with lead!"

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
Now that I understand what you mean, you would still not use the term "to take yourself hostage". If anything it's close to blackmailing. And to be honest: if someone tried to rob a bank and said "give me all your money, or I'll shoot myself", who in their right mind would stop them?

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
Dear Keswick,
to be honest, I didn't get the point of the last semi-sentence.
What do you mean by "who in their right mind would stop them?" Is is something such as: "It's up to them, if they want to live or not? LG

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
Hi,
Sorry about that, I thought you might know the phrase. What I meant to say is: Niemand, der bei Verstand ist, haelt jemanden davon ab, wenn er eine Bank ausraubt und sagt, Geld her oder ich erschiesse mich.
in their right mind = bei Verstand sein/seine Sinne beisammen haben.
I hope this makes it clearer.

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
This doesn't only make it clearer but much, much, clearer:)
Would you let someone pull the trigger if he said so?

Re: Taking oneself as a hostage
I've never been in such a situation, and hopefully never will be. But a natural instinct is to protect yourself and your loved ones. So if someone said to me: give me your child, or I shoot myself, then be my guest.
