Hi,
is it correct to say "The problem are not the employees" or do I have to say "The problem is not the employees"? Both sound profoundly stupid to my ears.

Im Englischen (und eigentlich allen indoeuropäischen Sprachen, die überhaupt noch ihre Verben konjugieren) richtet sich die Form des finiten Verbs immer nach dem Subjekt. Die englische Sprache hat außerdem noch die Eigenschaft, dass die Wortstellung im Satz bestimmt, welche Rolle ein Wort in dem Satz hat, das ist üblicherweise mit der Satzformel S-P-O ausgedrückt und bedeutet hier, das Subjekt steht immer vor dem Prädikat.
Im konkreten Fall heißt das
The problem are/is not the employees
Das Prädikat ist "are/is not the employees", denn das Verb "to be" ist fast immer (und hier eben auch) eine Kopula, also ein Wort, dass "Nichtverben" dazu befähigt das Prädikat zu sein. Nach S-P-O heißt das, dass "the problem" das Subjekt sein muss.
Da "the problem" aber ein Singular ist, muss das Verb auch im Singular stehen, also müsste es "The problem is not the employees" heißen.
Würde man es umdrehen und den Satz mit "The employees" beginnen, dann hätte man hier ein Pluralsubjekt und es heißt "The employees are not the problem".
Im Deutschen ist das anders, denn dort bestimmt sich das Subjekt nicht nach der Wortstellung.
