infinitive or gerund

Beitrag von ibex »

Hello,
In my textbook it says that "advise" should only be used with a gerund, and not with an infinitive. In the online version of the Cambridge E-E dictionary, however, it says (besides the gerund version) "to give someone advice: I think I'd advise him to leave the company." Is it only possible because there is an object or could I also say "She advised to take a holiday". I mean, it does sound funny without an object, but can't it be used with an infinitive as a matter of principle or is it just unusual?

Thanks!
