The Significance of the Frontier in American History

Hallo zusammen,
Ich bin in der Q1(11.ten) und habe Englisch LK...wir behandeln zur Zeit die Frontierthese von Frederick j. Turner und jetzt sollen wir folgende Aufgabe bearbeiten :
Concentrate on images used by Turner that are connected with the idea of the 'American frontier'. Then think about and try to explain what Turner wants to emphasize by using them.
Ich hab jetzt 2 images gefunden :
1. in this advance, the frontier is the outer edge of the wave- the meeting point between savagery and civilization.
2. the most significant thing about the American frontier is, that it lies at the hither edge of free land.
Was meint Turner mit diesen beiden Aussagen? Und was bedeutet 'hither' in diesem Zusammenhang? Wäre nett, wenn ihr Antworten würdet...
