The English Premier League

History

The English Premier League, since 2007 Barclays Premier League, started at 20[sup]th[/sup] February 1992 after problems with the UEFA, caused a tragedy in 1989, where many Liverpool fans died.
Barclays is the official sponsor of the league.
The League started originally with 22 clubs.
The first goal ever scored by Brian Deane in a 2-1 win with Sheffield United against Manchester United.
In 1995 the number of clubs reduced to 20 by the FIFA.
2006 the FIFA wanted to reduce one more time to 18 clubs, but the Premier League refused.
2011 the welsh club Swansea City was promoted to the Premier League as the first non-English club.
Since the start at 1992, 45 clubs took part of the Premier League, but only 5 clubs won the title.
Manchester United 12 times, Arsenal and Chelsea London 3 times and Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City 1 time.

Basics

In the Premier League are 20 clubs. In one season, every club plays against each other twice. One time at home, one time away.
The first place gains the League Trophy and qualifies for the UEFA Champions League.
The second and the third also qualifies for the Champions League. The fourth qualifies for the Europe League. The fifth and the FA-Cup-Winner qualifies for the Europe League qualifications.
The last three teams relegate for the nPower Championship, the second English league.

Clubs

The English clubs are considered as the best teams in the world.
In the Premier League, there are 6 teams from London. Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United. In Manchester, there are with Manchester United, Manchester City and Wigan Athletic 3 teams present. Also in Liverpool are several clubs like Liverpool and Everton.
The most successful clubs national and international are Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea London and Liverpool, because they won much titles like the League title, FA Cup, Champions League and the Europa League.

Rivalry

In England, there is a huge rivalry between different clubs. Often its caused of the same city they come from. In London, every club from London is a rival. But a special derby is the North London Derby. Its Arsenal versus Tottenham. But the West London Derbies with Chelsea, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers are also very entertaining. Of course, in Manchester there is a derby too, between Manchester United against Manchester City. This is a very spirited match.
In Liverpool, Everton against the Liverpool FC is a classic derby. But this derby is different, for the reason that in this derby there is no hate against the other team. They respect each other.
But not only in individual cities are rivals. For example Arsenal London and Manchester United are
very huge rivals, also because of their big history.
